RE.PA.RAR

RE.PA.RAR takes its title from the Portuguese verb reparar, which can mean to repair, restore, make amends, observe, notice or pay attention.

Created in the context of the exhibition complexo brasil at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the performance took place as visitors left the exhibition. Lucas França invited them to spend a few minutes in conversation about what, in their personal experiences, in the relationships they form or in the world they inhabit, they felt was in need of repair. The encounters took place in Portuguese and English and, with the participants’ consent, were recorded in audio.

The conversations moved between personal and collective experiences, touching on memory, migration, colonial history and relations between Brazil and Portugal. The recordings were subsequently composed into a sound piece, with sound design by Hugo Vasconcelos.

The piece was later incorporated into complexo brasil and remained available to visitors in the hammock area of the Lower Gallery, bringing the voices produced through these encounters back into the exhibition space.
